Fast-Track Your Tax Refund: Insider Tips to Avoid Delays

February 07, 20242 min read

It’s that time of year again, Philly! Tax season is in full swing, and the IRS is busy processing returns for 2023. If you’re one of the many eagerly awaiting a refund, you’ll want to hear these expert tips to get your hands on that cash quicker.

Steer Clear of Simple Slip-Ups

The IRS has cranked up its gears since January 29th, anticipating over 146 million individual tax returns. And while most of us have until April 15th to file, why wait when a refund could be on the horizon?

Mark Steber, a top tax pro, says that it’s the little blunders – those “self-inflicted mistakes” – that can slow down your refund. Last year, the average refund was $3,167. That’s a nice chunk of change you don’t want to wait around for.

Go Digital, Get Paid

The quickest route to refund town? “Filing electronically and choosing direct deposit,” says IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. Imagine your refund landing in your bank account without the hassle of a paper check. Last year, a whopping 93.8% of taxpayers enjoyed the perks of e-filing.

But, pump the brakes for a sec – double-check your banking details like your routing and account numbers. One typo could send your refund off-course, and we don’t want that.

Accuracy is Key

This isn't a game of horseshoes – close isn't good enough when it comes to your taxes. Make sure you’ve got all your ducks – or rather, all your documents – in a row for an error-free filing. Misspelled names, incorrect Social Security numbers, and wonky math can trip you up.

When Will That Refund Show Up?

Hit the submit button on your e-filing, and you could see your refund within 21 days, says Werfel. That’s if everything’s in order. If you’re claiming credits like the earned income tax credit or the child tax credit, mark your calendars for February 27th at the earliest.

Keep tabs on your refund through the IRS’s improved Where’s My Refund tool. It’s got the scoop on what you might need to do next, and you can check in just 24 hours after e-filing.
